Born in Hong Kong, 1997, lives and works in London, United Kingdom. Kristy M. Chan’s hologram-like work explores the notion of displacement, movement and change. Dense with information and odd depictions of her environment, Chan’s work reflects on her upbringing in Hong Kong and the experience of migration. It explores the act of locating the notion of “home” and its relationship with its cultural geographies. Her work acts as a visual archive and a documentation of the mundanity of everyday life as well as the emotions she experiences. Responding differently in regards to people, seasons, temperatures, environments and studio spaces, her practice begins anew in response to the ever-changing external stimulus. Each work is the direct result of the process of its own making, perhaps a parallax of reality through irrational conversion, and an intentional analysis of Chan’s identity and environment, diffracted by paint.

Chan describes these abstracted spaces as “stolen realities” that are imported into her images and reterritorialized in a new space, allowing new perspectives. The mergers of these conjectural randomness seems peculiar and notionless, but reveal their origins, intentions and intensions through imagination and close investigation. These “stolen realities” also ponder on the notion of the presentness and of the minute events of her everyday life, encouraging a mindful and appreciative perspective towards the mundane.

She received a First-Class Honours Bachelor’s Degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2019, and a Masters in Contemporary Art at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art, 2020.
